TrendingBlack is a web app and Chrome extension that display curated news articles relevant to Black culture and community. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.
Browsing articles in TrendingBlack requires no account and no personal data. If you choose to sign in with Google to react to or comment on articles, we collect the following from your Google profile:
When you are signed in, we also store the reactions and comments you submit, linked to your account, so we can display them back to you and other users.
We collect aggregate article engagement counts, such as how many times an article is opened in TrendingBlack and how many times readers click through to the original publisher. These counters are stored at the article level and are not tied to your account.
We do not:
The web app makes same-origin requests through app.trendingblack.com, and the extension makes requests to our API server (trendingblack.jeremiahoclark.workers.dev). These requests fetch news article data (titles, summaries, images, and source URLs), update aggregate article engagement counts, and submit reactions or comments. We store open and click events only as article-level counters and do not link them to your account. If you are signed in, the web app sends its first-party session cookie and the extension sends its session token so we can associate reactions and comments with your account.
The web app uses a secure, HTTP-only, first-party session cookie to keep you signed in. It does not store your session token or Google profile in browser local storage. We do not use third-party cookies.
The extension may use Chrome's local storage API (chrome.storage.local) to cache article data for faster loading. This data is stored locally on your device and is never transmitted externally. You can clear this data at any time by removing the extension.
The extension requests the following permissions:
We request only the minimum permissions necessary for the extension to function.
News articles displayed in TrendingBlack link to their original publications (e.g., The Root, Black Enterprise, Essence). When you click an article, you are navigating to that publication's website, which is governed by its own privacy policy.
TrendingBlack is a general-audience news aggregator. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children under the age of 13.
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above.
